Understory

White Pass Elementary School

Randle, WA

16’h x 28’w x 2.5’d

2014

Understory is a sculptural installation inspired by the monumental landscape of the coastal forest of Washington State, and the dense undergrowth of the forest floor. It is a playful magnification of the delicate fiddlehead ferns and hidden mushrooms that grow below the massive trees.

The powder-coated, stainless steel elements create a linear dance of color and a rich overlay of form. The daylight interacts with the sculpture, casting shadows throughout the day.

Understory was sponsored by the Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with White Pass School District.

“They went above and beyond to deliver a wonderful artwork ahead of time and on-budget. The selection committee loved working with them, and loves the final artwork. They are good communicators and good listeners. I look forward to working with them again!”Rebecca Solverson
