The Balfour Brickner Early Childhood Center is a Reggio Emilia inspired pre-school, based on the principles of respect, responsibility, community, and learning through exploration and discovery.

The physical environment is crucial to Reggio Emilia’s early childhood programs and the schools are generally filled with plants, and awash with natural light. Our challenge for this project was to create this sense of a natural outdoor space in a boxy, interior room with no windows.

We brought the outdoors inside by creating three nests, which provide a variety of experiences, and encourage group play as well as independent exploration.

“…they were able to incorporate the philosophical framework of our school into a magical structure of nests and trees. The playroom is now a place of discovery and imagination for our children; it is full of adventure and surprises…Every deadline was on time, the project was exactly on budget…Without a doubt the playroom is now the focal point of our school.”Lori Schneider
