Intimate Strangers was an exhibit about slavery in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Many Americans believe that slavery was peculiar to the South, but the North, particularly Connecticut and New York, was economically dependent on slave labor as well. Unlike the South however, the slaves often lived in the master’s house, and shared intimately in the family life. This exhibit examined how slavery manifested itself in the daily life of the North.
